International Day for Biological Diversity Celebrated on May 22

Importance of Biodiversity

The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), celebrated annually on May 22, commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of biodiversity for the health of our planet and well-being.

The United Nations (UN) has proclaimed May 22 as IDB to highlight the urgent need for conservation and sustainable use of biological resources. Biological diversity refers to the variety of living organisms on Earth, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Biodiversity provides countless benefits to humans, including food, medicine, clean air and water, and pollination services. It also plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and supporting ecosystem resilience. However, human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change are threatening biodiversity and its vital services.

IDB serves as a platform to promote understanding and appreciation of biodiversity, inspire collective action to protect it, and advocate for sustainable practices that safeguard the future of our planet and the well-being of generations to come.
